The Two Oceans Aquarium

Going to the aquarium when I'm much older opened my eyes to what a beautiful planet we have. There was such a variant of different marine life and all so fascinating. I  actually met up with the rest of the class due to me being suck in traffic but ended up being the first one to arrive # punctual. Everyone seemed super keen about going on our first life science outing for the year expect the chemistry student which is kinda like our whole class, who were writing a test later that day.

We were all split up into our practical groups with our demonstrator and given a worksheet which was kinda just given to us cause they didn't want us to just enjoy the aquarium but rather be observed about the different kinds of fish biodiversity. I was super confused this day for more than one reason tbh. One being that I still didn't know who exactly my friends were  and two getting lost every 20 minutes # confused as always!

Once were done looking around we were getting ready for a fish dissection which was totally mack! Talk about putting a girl off fish for months. Once you do a fish dissection at the aquarium you will never see fish the same. Youngmony, #word. We also saw sharks which is TOTALLY COOL! Plus they were baby catfish sharks which kinda just looks like tuna fish but with a suckie month and are actually cute but could bite and suck you blood. Yet they still were super cute maybe because they were babies still( thinking face)

A remarkable day out at Cape Point

A remarkable day out at Cape Point

Cape Point is located at the tip of the Cape Peninsula south-west of Cape Town. Its a nature reserve within the Table Mountain National Park which was declared Natural World Heritage Site in December 1999.The scenic beauty of Cape Point has become a international icon of great historical interest with many tourists drawn to the area because of its rich maritime history.

This narrow stretch of land with beautiful valleys, bays and beaches, contains a mix of extraordinarily diverse and unique fauna and flora. The flora vegetation of the area have smallest but richest of the world's six floral kingdoms.Cape point  is a paradise that has 7 750 hectares of rich and varied flora and fauna; abounding with buck, baboons, zebra and more than 250 species of birds. The rocks and cliffs towering more than 200 metres above the sea which cuts deep into the ocean provides a breathtaking background for the Parks’ rich bio-diversity.

Visiting this reserve was majestic I felt like was in paradise! The first stop site we came to after that smelly, compacted ride was the beach. That first smell of sea water was refreshing to everyone in the bus so much so that once everyone was out of the bus they seemed to have photo fever! Everyone seemed either be taking or in  photos or either photo booming, some memorable moments if have to say so myself.

The last stop site was the lighthouse and may I say NEVER AGAIN! The final site had baboons roaming around like they were just going about there normal routine even though hundreds of people kept staring and taking pictures of there asses and unusual behavior. The one baboon was playing with a choice condom trying to open it we all had our dirty little comments to say about moment which made it that much more funnier at the time.

After admiring the baboons for a while we decided as a group to walk up the lighthouse trail not knowing that was a recipe for disaster. If you ever needed to shed a kilo or two you should do that hike as a workout. I felt as if I was gonna die from a lost of feeling in my body but boy did it feel good reaching the top of that lighthouse after what felt likes hours of walking to get there. Once at the top of the lighthouse I felt so at peace and content. It made me want  to appropriate our planet and surroundings more. Our country is such a beautiful place and we often taking for granted how lucky we are to have such a amazing country. That's filled with a variety of different bio-diversity and species. Though many times I regret living in south Africa because of the high crime rates and all the other negative things. We have many things to be proud of such as having 8 of the worlds heritage sites, having amazing pollution free areas and our marine and wildlife is something to be admired.

reflective essay on life science

Reflective essay on Life Science 151

University has being a great transition from last year for me. I've come to take more responsibility this year than i could have ever imagined, in doing so I have matured tremendously in every aspect. I think the ECP program has had a great deal in shaping me the way I am this year to prepare myself for the years to come. This extra program has given me just a taste of what is to come and how I should approach my work from now on wards.

Life Science 151 has given me more knowledge about things that interested me in grade 10, when i first chose biology. I chose this subject in throughout my high school learning, the reason being I was a very curious person and wanted to know how life and the world around us work. Though this was my favourite subject, topics were not done in detail due to time constraints. Life Science 151 has given me that extra bit of knowledge and understanding that I was seeking. We were able to go in detail about DNA and proteins, things that I really enjoy doing and listening too. We obtain our marks through practicals, tutorials, tests, assignments, attendance and class work.

The first test we did, I failed badly due to a lack of studying. I thought the work we did I knew and was easy, turned out not to be the case. It bite me in my a**. That was the first time I had EVER failed a biology test. Talk about a failure! After that I vowed to never fail another test because of not studying. Turns out that if you put that little bit of effort to study and pay attention in lectures, you will definitely won't fail and the lecturers aren't as mean as I thought. They actually care about you-who would have thought?!

I enjoy practicals the most in life science. Its SUPER fun and we get to work with cool laboratory things. The practicals I enjoy the most is when we working with the microscopes. We get to work with cool specimens and I'm actually able to know if this is what I really want to for the rest of my life. An it is! I love being in the lab, its kind of my highlight of the week compared to the rest of lectures and stuff we get (LOL).
